Dear Trick-or-Treater:

Thank you so much for signing up to write a thing about a fandom and characters I love! I am ridiculously easy to please when it comes to people writing me things. Seriously, just make me something based on any of my requests and I’m sure I’ll love it. So--aside from the Do Not Wants--please feel free to ignore the rest of this letter. It’s really only here to give you inspiration if you don’t know what to write, but if you have your own ideas already, please go wild with them. One of the fun parts about somebody making things for my prompts is when they come up with things I would never have thought of myself.

So, about those Do Not Wants:

DNW (general):

-Long fic. Anything more than about 5000 words or so and I start getting anxious about reading and commenting in a timely fashion while still giving the story the attention it deserves, so I’d just rather you didn’t.
-Choose-Your-Own-Adventure/interactive/game-style fic
-Body image issues. I don’t mind brief mentions if it’s canon, but please don’t spend a lot of time dwelling on a character hating their body. (If you decide to go the trans hunter route, I wouldn't mind a bit more exploration of body image issues, but I would still prefer it not to be the main focus of the story.)
-It-was-only-a-dream type endings
-Tuuri returning to life essentially unchanged

DNW (smut):

-Sounding
-Infantilization
-That thing where one or more of the people involved doesn’t know what sex is or realize they’re having it
-Religion kink--like, naughty nuns and priests and what have you (Sex with gods/while being a god is OK though)
-One partner calling out another’s name during orgasm

General likes: I really like all kinds of fic, from silly fluff, action and adventures and worldbuilding to smut and hurt/comfort. Feel free to take it darker, too: violence, character death, betrayal, consent issues sexual and otherwise, bad things happening to characters I like AND characters I like doing bad things. I’m open to different POVs and tenses, and unusual fic formats like poetry and epistolary/documentary fic.

A brief and really not exhaustive list of story elements I especially like: Comfort after a nightmare, self-sacrifice, loyalty and trust issues, elections, platonic bed-sharing, hugs, language geekery, communication issues, breakups (either the kind where the original relationship is eventually patched up, or where the people involved manage to forge a different but still mutually satisfactory type of relationship afterward, or where nothing is okay again and everything hurts), ethical dilemmas, food porn and food preparation, parenting/childcare, exploration of canon-appropriate religious themes.

If you want to write me smut, here are a few of my (many) favorite kinks: D/s dynamics, informal kink negotiation that feels true to the dynamic of those particular characters (although under-negotiated kink or the assumption that the negotiation has taken place offscreen are also a-ok), magic/superpowers/highly advanced technology or whatever unique features of the setting or characters being used for sexual purposes, improvised restraints and sex toys, blades, slicing/tearing off clothes, fingers in mouths, loyalty kink, trust kink, praise kink--especially the kind where the praised party is somewhat reluctant or embarrassed to accept the praise (creepy praise kink like e.g. in scenario where a rapist praises their victim for being good while threatening them is also great), one or more participants not getting off during the scene but enjoying it anyway, semi-public or outdoor sex, awkward sex, situations where different participants have different understandings of what’s going on (as in, A thinks the sex is consensual but B is actually mind-controlled, or A is putting on a show for C, who unbeknownst to B is watching the whole thing, or A thinks it’s a casual hookup but B is in love and afraid to mention it because they don’t want to ruin what they’ve got, or whatever.) In general, I like a lot of weird stuff (and vanilla stuff too!) so if there’s something you want to write, unless I’ve specifically DNW’d it, it’s probably okay.

A note about art: I’m not requesting art for this exchange just because I didn’t want to come up with another set of prompts, but art treats are always loved and appreciated! A few things I like to see in art: the kind of character portrait where a lot of thought has gone into details of clothing, hairstyle, etc even if nothing in particular is happening, loose sketchy comick-y things that illustrate a character moment or interaction. I also like things that incorporate text and images in various ways, like calligraphy, comics, maps and diagrams, and I’m really fond of watercolors and Art Nouveau-inspired stylings. Also, for the book fandoms I’m requesting, illustrations of any scenes with these characters would be awesome.

And now for the specific prompts! Like I said, feel free to ignore these if you have a different idea, or mix and match them with my general likes however you want.

The Shrine/An Argument - Fleet Foxes (Music Video)

You can watch this video here! It’s only eight minutes, totally worth it.

The Ungulate

What this looks like to me is that the ungulate is the sole survivor of a massacre, and they are on a quest to avenge their people, and the wolf and humanoids and serpent-creatures are their enemies. I'd love to see the whole background of that fleshed out, especially the ungulate’s relationship with the creature whose severed head they lick at the beginning--were they lovers or parent and child or comrades or rivals or what? The whole bit after the serpent pulls the ungulate down into the water is ambiguous and full of possibilities, too. Is it a vision the ungulate sees while drowning, and what does it mean? Who is the humanoid who emerges from the ungulate’s body after it’s ripped apart--another representation/form of the ungulate’s personality, or a separate person altogether? I am intrigued by the idea that, whoever they are, they're the one telling the story. Does the way it ends mean triumph or failure for the ungulate, or some combination of both?

The Heroes of Olympus - Rick Riordan

Note: I haven’t read the Trials of Apollo books yet, but I don’t mind spoilers.

Original Hunter of Artemis

I’m interested in stories about the Hunters of Artemis from mythological times right up to the present day, or even in the future (hunters of Artemis IN SPACE?) What might have led girls from different societies and places to join the hunters, and how do such a variety of girls from different backgrounds get along together? Are there tensions between hunters of mortal and demigod origins and nature spirits--how about hunters who are monsters: harpies, cyclopes, sirens? Is the society of the hunters different under Thalia’s leadership than under Zoe’s?

I'm also interested in the possibility of trans girls becoming hunters, whether they're contemporary girls or if they come from societies whose constructions of gender might be different from modern Western ones. Do they find unconditional acceptance with the hunters or are there tensions? What form would the Blessing of Artemis take for them (I imagine it might vary based on the individual)?

Original Zhang Character(s)

I'm interested in the whole sweep of history of the Zhang family, from the time the legion arrived in China through their forming relationships with the local people, mythologies, deities and spirits, through Frank's branch of the family coming to North America and afterwards. I'm also curious about Frank’s meeting with his ancestors, which was kind of hurried past in the books.

I like all the Zhangs we've seen--Emily, Frank, and Grandma--and would be happy for any or all of them to make an appearance, but I'd like a focus on the original characters.

Lou Ellen

I love Lou Ellen’s cheerful, twisted sense of humor, and I really want to know more about her background. What was she doing during the Titan war? If she fought with the Hermes cabin and the rest of Camp Half-Blood, how does that affect her relationship with her siblings, most of whom fought for the Titans, and were only granted amnesty after the war? Or alternatively, if she fought for the Titans, how does that affect how she gets along with the rest of the camp, especially her fellow head counselors? Or was she a lone half-blood surviving with her wits and magic who took no part in the war and was thus an acceptable compromise to both sides? What relationship does she have with Alabaster, if any, and is she still in touch with him?

I ship Lou Ellen with Miranda Gardiner based on their like two lines of interaction in The Lost Hero, and despite the fact that we know basically nothing about Miranda. So if you want to write me anything with them I’d be thrilled.

Hylla

Please write anything from Hylla and Reyna’s backstory! Their childhood in Puerto Rico, how they found Circe’s island and started working for her, fighting pirates together. How and why did they come to part ways? Anything about how Hylla became queen of the Amazons, or a slice of life of a would-be world conqueror, would be great too. I’m kind of upset about how casually Rick Riordan killed off most of the Amazons and Hunters, and I'd love to see Hylla and Thalia team up and go to the underworld to get some of their fallen comrades back. (Or even just a soft-AU where things weren't as bad as looked. It doesn't count if we never saw the bodies, right? I don’t insist on fix-its, though, if you had something more canon-compliant in mind.) I ship Hylla with her right-hand warrior Kinzie, and I'd love to see loyalty kink with them , or just plain kink. I like the idea that Kinzie, who can be aggressively flirty with guys, always comes home to Hylla--or even brings the guys home to Hylla to share. (If you do decided to go this route, please use whatever other characters strike your fancy in this scenario, or OCs--it's all good!)

Uplift Series - David Brin

Gillian Baskin

So you know how some people consider Kirk or Picard or whoever their captain? Gillian Baskin is my captain. Write me a story where she’s being awesome and captainly please? Something from Streaker’s missing years--either one of the dramatic episodes hinted at in the books, like the escape from the Institutes at Oakka, or else a smaller, more downtime sort of story (in three years, there must have been some, even on Streaker.) Or else, does Gillian manage to semi-retire after the series the way she intends? Show me her working on treatments and therapies with Emerson, finding a publisher for Alvin’s journal, having drinks and swapping stories with Helene Alvarez and Jacob Demwa, and acting as an honorary grandmother to dozens of baby dolphins.

Stand Still Stay Silent

Tuuri

One thing I don’t want for this exchange is a post-chapter 15 scenario where Tuuri returns to life essentially unchanged. I would be happy to get something from before chapter 15, whether it’s anything from the family backstory, an encounter with the supernatural that young Tuuri had in either Saimaa or Keuruu--maybe she did try to steal a boat at some point, and Ran Into Something?

Alternatively, I’d love Tuuri’s adventures in the afterlife, interacting with the Swan of Tuonela or any of her dead relatives, having some cake with Pastor A or geeking out academically with the author of the info pages. Tuuri returning to the world of the living as a ghost, spirit, goddess, animal, or undead creature of any sort would be great too. I’d especially love Tuuri to appear to help her friends/family just when everything seems lost, or helping guide Sleipnope/the ghosts to the afterlife.

Reynir

I’ve been loving the speculation about there being something off about Reynir, whether it’s that the boat that he first wakes up in in the dreamworld is an indication that he’s an escapee from the afterlife, that he’s actually somehow Árni Reynisson, or my own pet theory, that he’s the “It” who’s looking for the Hotakainens--when Onni first encounters Reynir he thinks he’s a hostile spirit, and he says that “It” is looking for them but Reynir is the one who actually finds them. One interesting possibility about any of these situations is of Reynir doesn’t know it himself, and thinks he’s exactly who he says he is. How does he find out the truth, and what does he do when he does?

I ship Reynir with Tuuri and with Onni--under most circumstances I would say or, but I find myself intrigued by a scenario where, if Reynir is someone who can move between the world of the living and the world of the dead in a perhaps somewhat Persephone-esque fashion, then Onni is his living lover and Tuuri is his dead lover.

Onni

As with Tuuri, I'd be happy to see spooky/sad Hotakainen backstory, and feel free to include Tuuri, Lalli, or any other relatives as well. The idea that Onni might become a kade in the wake of Tuuri's death is intriguing, or if you want to take his reaction in a different direction, that would be great too.

Like I said above, I ship Onni with Reynir, and if you want to mix and match dark supernatural prompts for them--kade Onni/undead Reynir?--that would be awesome. Or something angsty where they have to work through all the stuff that’s happened recently, successfully or otherwise. Or maybe they could have a supernatural adventure together, or have a reunion with Pastor A?

I’m also really interested in what Onni’s relationship with Taru is like. I get the impression that Tuuri and Lalli didn’t remember her from before the mission, but Onni might have. What memories of her does he have from his childhood? What has it been like living in such close quarters with her for the mission, given his resentment but also that she’s the only one he can easily talk to? I have this idea of the two of them traveling back to Finland together post-mission, the only two survivors of their family … how would that go?

Taru

If you’d rather write about Taru without Onni, she’s probably Seen Some Shit as a strategist for the Finnish army, and I’d love to read about any spooky encounters she might have had. Or something with Trond or Siv and Torbjörn--how did they meet? Under appropriately scary circumstances? (Did any of them literally fall into her bed?)

Author of the Info Pages

I’d love to see the research that went into writing any of the info pages, whether it’s encounters with various kinds of trolls, or attempts to reclaim lost souls, or the Finnish afterlife.

The author of the info pages is a mysterious character, and it would be great to see an original take on them--but there are also several fan interpretations floating around already whose adventures I’d love to see more of, and happily their creators have given permission for other people to create things about them if they want. Kiraly’s Rúna is from the Dreamworld Ladies series, wavewright62’s Jens is from Suddenly Illuminating the Night and Talimee’s Arndis is from Väinämöinen's Land.

If for some reason you want to stalk me, I am dead easy to stalk; I'm minutia_r (or occasionally minutia-r) all over the internet: LJ/DW, AO3, tumblr, deviantart, ff.net, and probably one or two other places I don't recall off-hand.

One last note, I would just like to say that I have already gotten some incredible stories for some of these prompts, and I am only requesting them again because a) I am greedy and want MOAR and b) I think there are new directions they could be taken in and other things about them to explore! But if you are one of the people who already wrote any of these, please know that I love you and your gifts.

Thank you! You are awesome, I am really looking forward to seeing what you make for me, and I hope you get great stories and/or art out of this exchange, too!

Dear Jukebox DJ,

Hi there! May I compliment you on either your excellent taste in music or your willingness to try something new and write fic about it, or both? In any case, I’m really looking forward to reading what you come up with.

(I've only requested fic for my main gift, but I would be thrilled to receive either fic or art treats! Podfic is not really my thing, so if you're thinking, "I would like to make a nice thing for Minutia, I wonder what she'd like?" the answer is probably not "Podfic"--but if you're thinking "I have been seized with inspiration by one of these prompts, I must do a podfic for it, it is my artistic vision, but wouldn't it be weird to gift podfic to someone who just said she doesn't like podfic?" then the answer is that I will be very flattered and listen to it and probably like it.)

I don’t expect you to treat every line of the song/frame of the video (nb: I am requesting a couple of music videos for the first time this year. I’m trying to edit my letter accordingly so that a) the language is inclusive of videos and b) anything general I have to say makes sense as applies to videos, but if I mess up, sorry!) as canon the way you might for a book or TV show. If you want to do a close reading of the text, that’s cool! If some phrase or image or mood from the song or video suggests a story to you, then run with that and don’t worry too much about contradicting or fitting the rest of the canon in around it--and especially don’t worry about the prompts in this letter, which are really just there to give you ideas in case you’re stuck.

However, I do have a few Do Not Wants:

DNW (general):

-Long fic. Anything more than about 5000 words or so and I start getting anxious about reading and commenting in a timely fashion while still giving the story the attention it deserves, so I’d just rather you didn’t.
-Purely introspective stories with no action or character interaction
-Choose-Your-Own-Adventure/interactive/game-style fic
-Body image issues. I don’t mind brief mentions if it’s canon, but please don’t spend a lot of time dwelling on a character hating their body.
-It-was-only-a-dream type endings

DNW (smut):

-Sounding
-Infantilization
-That thing where one or more of the people involved doesn’t know what sex is or realize they’re having it
-Religion kink--like, naughty nuns and priests and what have you
-One partner calling out another’s name during orgasm

General likes: I really like all kinds of fic, from silly fluff, action and adventures and to smut (all gender combinations and as many characters as you can keep track of body parts of welcome) and hurt/comfort. Feel free to take it darker, too: violence, character death, betrayal, consent issues sexual and otherwise, bad things happening to characters I like AND characters I like doing bad things. I’m open to different POVs and tenses, and unusual fic formats like poetry and epistolary/documentary fic.

A brief and really not exhaustive list of story elements I especially like: Comfort after a nightmare, self-sacrifice, loyalty and trust issues, platonic bed-sharing, hugs, language geekery, communication issues, breakups (either the kind where the original relationship is eventually patched up, or where the people involved manage to forge a different but still mutually satisfactory type of relationship afterward, or where nothing is okay again and everything hurts), ethical dilemmas, food porn and food preparation, parenting/childcare, elections, and exploration of canon-appropriate religious themes.

For this exchange in particular: I like stories with speculative elements best. I’m a big fan of the power of science fiction and fantasy to concretize metaphors, so if you’re listening to the song and wondering, “Is this line meant literally or figuratively? Figuratively, right?” you will make me very happy by going for the literal interpretation. Similarly, for the videos, I'd prefer if the weird stuff happening in them was actually happening, rather than being a metaphor for someone's feelings or whatever.

I don't expect the character in the story who corresponds to the narrator of the song (if there is one) to have the same gender as the vocalist. Go with what you think would make a more interesting story, not with what the singer’s voice sounds like. (Except Oleander, I would rather you kept that one f/f if you write it.)

Okay, on to the specific prompts!

Take Flight - Lindsey Stirling (Music Video)
link

What's the significance of the blue flower, and how does it make its way to the protagonist at the beginning? Is it a message (possibly from her future self)? Can you tell me anything about her research? It looks like she might be designing something, but we never actually see her building anything. The Escher-like sequence seems like it might support a time-travel reading, where she's chasing her future self through a surreal landscape and never quite catching up. Or is it her clone or her evil twin? Anything about the different worlds she travels through would also be great.

The Shrine/An Argument - Fleet Foxes (Music Video)
link | lyrics

What this looks like to me is that the ungulate is the sole survivor of a massacre, and they are on a quest to avenge their people, and the wolf and humanoids and serpent-creatures are their enemies. I'd love to see the whole background of that fleshed out, especially the ungulate’s relationship with the creature whose severed head they lick at the beginning--were they lovers or parent and child or comrades or rivals or what? I am intrigued by the idea that, whoever they are, they're the one telling the story. Does the way it ends mean triumph or failure for the ungulate, or some combination of both?

Fistful of Rain - Warren Zevon (Song)
link | lyrics

Apparently the protagonist of this song is coming into conflict with an enemy who has powers over the flow of time and nature of reality--what with being able to turn diamonds back into coal and all--and maybe their entire life is a fiction manufactured by this enemy? But their mind is fighting back against it although they don’t totally understand what’s going on? And the only way they have of fighting back is a metaphor for embracing the transient nature of reality?

Oleander - Sarah Harmer (Song)
link | lyrics

Is the narrator of this song singing to a woman, or to a houseplant? If you just look at the words, it might be a houseplant--but it's a houseplant she's got weirdly intense feelings towards. I like to think that this is the story of a human woman and her nature-spirit ex-girlfriend who she would like to get back together with. I like the sense that the narrator has realized and learned from the mistakes that she made the first time around, and I would be interested in either a happy or bittersweet ending.

Long Steel Grass (Noche Espagnola) - Edith Sitwell and William Walton (Song)
link | lyrics

So according to the link with the lyrics above, Edith Sitwell said this was about a couple of cats having a love affair, which I guess is as good interpretation as any other. There is definitely some kind of courtship as battle or battle as courtship going on here, on a weird and epic scale which brings to mind space opera or the faerie court. I’m particularly (though not exclusively) interested in the white soldiers--what does a grunt’s-eye view of this conflict and/or reproductive process look like?

Great White Bear - Dear Reader (Song)
link | lyrics

I really love the opening lines of this song, with the contrast between the mythic idea of hiding in the belly of a great white bear, and the very physical, even disgusting details of it. It seems to me that the continuation of the song is explaining how he got into this desperate situation. The obvious interpretation is that he and she are romantically involved, and her father disapproves to the point that he’s trying to kill them--in which case, my question would be, why? And what sort of power does he have to be able to pursue them so relentlessly and seemingly with impunity? But I would also be super interested in alternate interpretations of the fix they’re in, the terrible sin, and what exactly they’re trying to escape from. (As well as, as usual, alternate gender interpretations of the characters.) How about what happens afterwards? Does his ploy work, and where does he go from there? Is she dead, and/or is there some chance for them to be reunited?

The End is the Beginning - Two Steps From Hell (Song)
link | lyrics

I really like the weird and epic feel of this song, the sense of the vast scale of the worldbuilding and the tragedy. It might be a story of an attempt at colonizing a new planet that went wrong, the ensuing conflict, and the return to space of the survivors? On the other hand, the dancing dead remind me of the Cherokee myth of the deluge, with its own cataclysmic themes.

Howlin' Bones - Hannah Aldridge (Song)
link | lyrics

I like to think that the narrator of this song is an actual malevolent supernatural entity--maybe even the capital-D Devil?--or a necromancer, and that the interlocutor thinks he's gotten the better of her in some bargain, but is about to discover how mistaken he is. I really enjoy the Weird West feel of it, and the contrast between the intimate scale of the events (with the repeated references to "this town") and the possibly cosmic powers of the narrator.

Rich in Love - Colin Linden (Song)
link | lyrics

This seems like a song about a mortal/standard human in a relationship with a fairy? Or other supernatural creature? Who has to go on a dream quest to his lover from some sort of supernatural malady. I really like the mythological and fairy-tale resonances of it--it brings to mind stories like Orpheus and Eurydice and the Twelve Dancing Princessess. I'm curious about the nature of the trouble that the lover is having, what the mortal finds in the dream world, and how it ends for them--in tragedy, in a break-up, in a successful (and perhaps mutual) rescue?

If for some reason you want to stalk me , I am dead easy to stalk; I'm minutia_r (or occasionally minutia-r) all over the internet: here, AO3, tumblr, deviantart, ff.net, 8tracks, and probably one or two other places I don't recall off-hand.

DNW (general):

-Long fic. Anything more than about 5000 words or so and I start getting anxious about reading and commenting in a timely fashion while still giving the story the attention it deserves, so I’d just rather you didn’t.
-AUs. Exceptions: Canon-divergence AUs, or crossovers/fusions with other fandoms I’m into. Those are great.
-Purely introspective stories with no action or character interaction.
-Choose-Your-Own-Adventure/interactive/game-style fic

DNW (smut):

-Sounding
-Infantilization
-That thing where one or more of the people involved doesn’t know what sex is or realize they’re having it
-Religion kink--like, naughty nuns and priests and what have you

General likes: I really like all kinds of fic, from silly fluff, action and adventures and worldbuilding to smut and hurt/comfort. Feel free to take it darker, too: violence, character death, betrayal, consent issues sexual and otherwise, bad things happening to characters I like AND characters I like doing bad things. I also like things that incorporate text and images in various ways, like calligraphy, comics, maps and diagrams. For this exchange, in-character Valentines from one character to another (even if it would make no actual sense in universe) would be super cute.

Okay, and now for the prompts:

Fandom: Stand Still Stay Silent

Note: So, Chapter 13 was a hell of a thing, huh? We’ll know more after the chapter break, but at this point it seems most likely that in any scenario set more than two weeks into the future of the comic, either Tuuri will be dead or the Known World will be irrevocably changed. I am fine with you making a thing with either option in mind, or with other, less likely options, if you can think of them. Similarly, I am equally okay with you incorporating new bits of canon as they come in, or choosing a jumping-off point from canon and going from there. Things set in the past or canon-divergent AUs are great too.

Michael Madsen/Signe Sørensen

These jerks! They’re my favorite prologue characters, and I’d love to see anything with them falling in love and/or getting married as the world they know falls apart around them. Hurt/comfort would be very welcome, especially Michael finding ways to comfort Signe as she tries to stay in contact with/get news of her friends and family. I imagine phones and the internet would have been a lifeline that didn’t fail all at once, and she might have been able to get some horrific news before the final horrific lack of news. Signe is tough and funny and a jerk, but of the prologue characters, she’s the one who’s going into the new world pretty much bereft of everyone she ever might have cared about, so--yeah, get her some hugs, please.

Alternatively, something set further in their future, with their son they named after their cat? The day-to-day domestic work of running a farm in a post-apocalyptic world? Clashes between the old world they grew up in and the new world of the next generation? How Iceland re-opening its borders might have affected their lives?

Sigrun Eide/Agneta

I love the contrasts between these two--Sigrun’s relentless, somewhat chaotic cheerfulness vs. Agneta’s air of being Done With Your Nonsense--as well as their similarities as two fierce, competent warrior women. I’d love to see them as a battle couple, fighting side-by-side and watching each other’s backs, or see how their fierceness and contrasts played out in bed (or wherever.) Could they ever have a relationship that was anything other than casual? What would happen if Agneta ever visited Dalsnes?

Michael Madsen II & Mikkel Madsen

Anything from light-hearted childhood shenanigans to grownup angst--I’m definitely interested in the possibility that Michael died in Kastrup, and how it happened and how Mikkel deals and doesn’t deal with it. I’d also love to see how the constant presence of a more exuberant twin help shaped Mikkel’s personality as we know and love it today. Identity hijinks of any sort would be very welcome. I have a pet theory--not that I necessarily expect to become canon, but that I think is a distinct and interesting possibility--that the person we know as Mikkel is actually Michael, who is impersonating his twin for (possibly grief-related) reasons. Something incorporating this premise would be awesome as well.

Fandom: The Queen's Thief - Megan Whalen Turner

Nahuseresh/Kamet

I would love to see anything with Medean world-conquering road trips while complaining about the conditions in barbaric countries! On a more serious note, I am fascinated by their character dynamic where Kamet has a certain amount of loyalty to and affection for Nahuseresh, but he also has a certain amount of resentment about his position which Nahuseresh has no clue about, while Nahusresh cares about and values Kamet, and makes some effort to shield him from his (Nahuseresh's) worst impulses, but again, has no clue about what Kamet actually thinks and feels much of the time. I would love to see this explored in any way.

As long as Kamet is Nahuseresh's slave, any consent he gives to sexual activities is going to be dubious at best, and I'd be interested in seeing all the different ways that could go (Kamet is totally into it but also very much aware that if he wanted to say no he couldn't; Kamet is manipulating Nahuseresh; Kamet wants to say no but can't in any way that Nahuseresh would understand and/or accept). The one thing I don't want is Nahuseresh knowingly raping Kamet; that's just not how I see this relationship.

Fandom: Crossover Fandom

Elsa (Frozen)/Charlotte La Bouff (The Princess and the Frog)

Lottie has her heart set on a prince, but I bet she'd be willing to go for a queen instead. She's got the diplomatic and social skills Elsa could use in a consort, and some experience in the care and feeding of driven types who sometimes go too far into self-denial in their quest to succeed. And Elsa might simultaneously find herself drawn to and exasperated by Lottie’s friendliness and apparent flightiness, and, eventually, by the core of steely ambition underneath.

I’d love to see them meeting at a diplomatic function of some kind, or thrown together on a magical adventure. If you're thinking of taking it in a smutty direction, I love sex magic and like temperature play too, so creative uses of Elsa’s powers could be fun.

Fandom: Chanur Series - C. J. Cherryh

Py/Khym:

Anything with Py and Khym on the Pride, trying to figure out how things are supposed to work now. Khym bringing out his legal skills, or his being fucking huge skills, or working on his culinary skills, and Pyanfar being all captainly and trusting him to get stuff done, them saving each other in exciting adventures or chilling together in more domestic moments. Or if you want to write backstory about their earlier married life, how they balanced Khym’s role as Lord Mahn and Pyanfar’s career in space, whether they found ways to work together even then. Something with their kids before that went to hell, or showing how that all went to hell?

Alternatively, I would love to get something smuttier for them as well! Canon is pretty quiet on how exactly hani sex works (although they are sort of roughly based on lions) so feel free to throw in whatever wild ideas you might have. And--okay. So you know that bit where Pyanfar and Khym are snuggling in bed and Pyanfar is like, “Hey, how would you feel about fucking the whole crew?” Make that happen for me and I will love you forever. (Please include Tully if you’re so inclined! But not Hilfy, because Khym feels weird about that.)

Py & Skkukuk

I’d love to see Skkukuk’s take on any of the events of the books, his initial reaction to being foisted on Pyanfar and how his feelings towards her change and his loyalty develops. I just want aaaaall the platonic loyalty kink for them. I’d love to see them trying to understand each other's culture and biology in order to better fulfill the obligations they feel they have towards each other--I’d particularly like to see Pyanfar sacrificing her own best interests for Skkukuk’s sake, or publicly claiming him when it would be more convenient not to. Or else Skkukuk accomplishing something beyond all reason and expectation for Py.

Fandom: Lively St. Lemeston series - Rose Lerner

Ash Cohen & Rafe Cohen

I would love to see anything from Ash and Rafe’s younger days, from when they were wee baby conmen up until right before the start of the book. Anything where they are looking after each other or being stupidly self-sacrificing for each other would be great. Caper fic would be awesome too. From the little we saw of her in the book and in the Purim ficlet from Rose Lerner’s website (scroll down the comments here to find it) Faige seemed pretty cool, so feel free to include her.

Alternatively, if you’d rather write something post-canon, how do the brothers maintain their relationship with Ash’s new identity and life? How does Rafe get along with his in-laws? (I would be quite happy with background Rafe/Jamie, and of course Ash/Lydia is lovely.) I am especially intrigued by the idea of Ash and Lydia occasionally going on holiday as a different, Jewish couple, and would love to see Ash and Rafe coaching Lydia on Jewish things.

Vorkosigan Saga - Lois McMaster Bujold

Kareen Koudelka/Mark Vorkosigan/Raven Durona

Kareen and Mark have a mutual option, but no one ever said it was an exclusive option, did they? I’d love to see them take their business association with Raven in a more intimate direction. Raven’s combination of curiosity, cynicism, and chill would probably equip him to deal with Mark’s issues and also what’s left of Kareen’s Barrayaran upbringing without too many problems. They could have a lot of fun together, and Mark and Kareen deserve all the pretty boys.

Raven Durona/Armsman Roic

THESE DORKS OK. I really loved their sections in Cryoburn, and would love to see more banter, spy shenanigans, and makeouts between them. Roic needs to expand his horizons! Roic's earnest grumpiness and Raven's cheerful cynicism are like chocolate and peanut butter.

Terrence Cee/Ethan Urquhart

I’d love to read about their Betan adventures before they get back to Athos, or about Terrence adjusting to life on Athos. If you’d like to go the farther-future route, write me a story about what happens when Ethan and Terrence are grandfathers and their crimes come to light when the first telepaths start cropping up, or about Galactic telepaths coming to seek asylum on Athos? Or if you want to write something sexier, I’d love something about their first time, or telepathic sex, or hurt/comfort either of the angsty, dealing-with-Terrence’s-traumatic-past variety, or the fluffy, Terrence-takes-care-of-Ethan-when-he-has-a-cold variety.

Things I’d like to see illustrated: Ethan pictured himself taking Cee sailing on the South Province coast, checking the underwater fences of his father’s fish farm--did Cetaganda have oceans?--salt sweat and salt water, hot hard work and cold beer and blue shrimp afterwards. Yes, draw me this please. Or anything sweet and shippy with them. The kids can come too, especially if any of them bear a distinct resemblance to the magnificent Admiral Quinn.

Lilly Durona & Georish Stauber

Something from their youth together, escaping from Baron Ryoval, and the origins of their Deal? Or maybe being long-distance frenemies in their old age.

Lilly Durona & Lotus Durona

Okay, something happened during Lotus' youth that made her decide to take that particularly baroque revenge on Lilly, and I would love to know what it was.

If for some reason you want to stalk me , I am dead easy to stalk; I'm minutia_r (or occasionally minutia-r) all over the internet: LJ/DW, AO3, tumblr, deviantart, ff.net, 8tracks, and probably one or two other places I don't recall off-hand.

Thank you! You are awesome, I am really looking forward to seeing what you make for me, and I hope you get great stories and/or art out of this exchange, too!

Dear Silent Night creator:

Hi! Unlike most of the time when I sign up for exchanges, odds are pretty good that we know each other already, at least in passing. So you may already know that I am ridiculously easy to please when it comes to people writing or drawing me things. Seriously, just make me something based on any of my requests and I’m sure I’ll love it. So--aside from the Do Not Wants--please feel free to ignore the rest of this letter. It’s really only here to give you inspiration if you don’t know what to write or draw, but if you have your own ideas already, please go wild with them. One of the fun parts about somebody making things for my prompts is when they come up with things I would never have thought of myself!

Dear Yuletide Writer,

Hello! Thank you so much for offering to write me a story in one of my favorite rare fandoms! I really will be delighted to get anything about them, so--aside from the Do Not Wants--please feel free to ignore the rest of this letter. It’s really only here to give you inspiration if you don’t know what to write, but if you have your own ideas already, please go wild with them. I am always interested in seeing new and interesting takes on my favorites, especially ones I would never have thought of myself.

One more general thing I want to add--I’m not requesting any five-minute fandoms like individual songs or picture books this year, but two of the canons I’m requesting are available in their entirety (or close enough to entirety) online, for free, legally, so if you haven’t yet I really do encourage you to check out Stand Still Stay Silent and SkyWorld, they’re great.

Anyway, If for some reason you want to stalk me, I am dead easy to stalk; I'm minutia_r (or occasionally minutia-r) all over the internet: LJ/DW, AO3, tumblr, deviantart, ff.net, 8tracks, and probably one or two other places I don't recall off-hand. (Minutiar on twitter is not me, though, oddly enough.)

Thank you once again, mystery writer! I am really looking forward to reading what you write for me, and I hope you get an awesome story too!
minutia_r: (Default)
Dear Creator,

Hi! Thank you for signing up to make something for me about some of my favorite characters in a series I love!

Things I like in general:

For art, illustrations of moments in the books; the kind of character portrait where a lot of thought has gone into details of clothing, hairstyle, etc even if nothing in particular is happening; loose sketchy comick-y things that illustrate a character moment or interaction. And anything in between, really--there's not a lot of art of these books in general and these characters in particular, so just seeing any visual representation of them makes me happy.

For fic, I like silly fluff, I like action, adventures, and worldbuilding, and I like smut (although, in this case, I mean Nahuseresh/Kamet, not Ina & Eurydice). I also like dark fic of all kinds: violence, character death, betrayal, consent issues sexual and otherwise, bad things happening to characters I like AND characters I like doing bad things. Bring it on! Feel free to bring in whatever other characters from the series or original characters that you think would make the story better, as long as the focus is still on the characters I requested. Also, canon-divergence AUs. Canon-divergence AUs are great.

Do not want:

For art, anything NSFW. That sort of thing is very hit-or-miss for me, and I'd rather not find your gift unintentionally hilarious.

For fic, I sometimes get a bit anxious about reading and commenting on longer fic, so I'd rather not get anything over 5000 words or so. On the other hand, if you write a meticulously-crafted gem that is exactly 500 words long, I will be thrilled, so please don't worry about it being too short! Also, if writing sumt, I do not like sounding, infantilization, or the sort of thing where one partner doesn't know what sex is or realize they're having it. Anything else is fair game.

For either, no AUs other than canon-divergence, please.

Now for the individual prompts!

Nahuseresh & or / Kamet

I would love to see anything with Medean world-conquering road trips while complaining about the conditions in barbaric countries! On a more serious note, I am fascinated by their character dynamic where Kamet has a certain amount of loyalty to and affection for Nahuseresh, but he also has a certain amount of resentment about his position which Nahuseresh has no clue about, while Nahusresh cares about and values Kamet, and makes some effort to shield him from his (Nahuseresh's) worst impulses, but again, has no clue about what Kamet actually thinks and feels much of the time. I would love to see this explored in any way.

If you decide to go the Nahuseresh/Kamet route (and please do if you're feeling it!), then as long as Kamet is Nahuseresh's slave, any consent is going to be dubious at best, and I'd be interested in seeing all the different ways that could go (Kamet is totally into it but also very much aware that if he wanted to say no he couldn't; Kamet is manipulating Nahuseresh; Kamet wants to say no but can't in any way that Nahuseresh would understand and/or accept). The one thing I don't want is Nahuseresh knowingly raping Kamet; that's just not how I see this relationship.

Ina & Eurydice

Ina and Eurydice strike me as being a couple of very sharp, capable, intelligent people who are very constrained by their roles in society and sheltered upbringing. I'd love to see them move beyond that during the events of A Conspiracy of Kings, anything with their adventures while Sophos is doing his own thing being a slave, or afterwards, hanging out with Eddis and possibly having their horizons broadened by living in Eddis the country for a while, which seems more egalitarian than Sounis if not perfectly so. I'd also like anything from Sophos, Ina, and Eurydice's shared childhood, or an AU where Ina and/or Eurydice end up ruling Sounis for one reason or another (like Sophos goes off to Eddis and leaves them in charge.)

If for some reason you want to stalk me, I am dead easy to stalk; I'm minutia_r (or occasionally minutia-r) all over the internet: LJ/DW, AO3, tumblr, deviantart, ff.net, 8tracks, and probably one or two other places I don't recall off-hand.

Thank you again! You are awesome, I am really looking forward to seeing what you write for me, and I hope you get a great story and/or art out of this exchange, too!

Dear Jukebox DJ,

Hi there! May I compliment you on either your excellent taste in music or your willingness to try something new and write fic about it, or both? In any case, I’m really looking forward to reading what you come up with.

(I've only requested fic for my main gift, but I would be thrilled to receive art treats as well!

Dear Rarelywritten Author:

Hi there! Thanks for offering to write me a story about a character or group of characters very dear to my heart!

I like all kinds of fic, from gen to shippy (I am a dedicated multishipper and will happily read any rating, any number/gender of participants), from warm-and-fluffy to dark (kill my favorite characters, please!), from plotty and action-packed to intense conversations on the Formless Plane of Dialogue (I don't tend to like extremely introspective stories where there's no interaction, however). I'm not terribly fond of AUs of the coffee-shop/university/whatever variety, but I like canon-divergence AUs as well as fusions and crossovers.

Here, have some specific prompts: All you fair and tender ladies )

On the other hand, if you’re reading this because I’m on your flist/reading page and this is the first you’re hearing about space swap--you guys, do this exchange with me! The DW comm is here and you can sign up here. It’s a multimedia exchange, so you can participate even if you’re not a fic writer. ( . . . do I know anyone who’s not a fic writer?) The list of available fandoms is a little short (nominations happened at around the same time as yuletide) but there are some pretty awesome ones there--I mean, there’s the ones I nominated.

Hi, yuletide writer!

How great is the fandom or fandoms that we matched on? So great, right? All those people who don't love that fandom are missing out. For instance, they're missing out on the excellent fic you're going to write me, which I'm going to love whatever it is, because it's going to be about some awesome characters in an awesome fandom.

I think you and I are going to get along okay.

Dear Fic Corner Scribbler,

Hello, there lovely person who is going to write a story in one of the fandoms I requested! Thank you so much, you are clearly awesome.

Please do not hesitate to ruin my childhood! (Actually I read most of these books for the first time as an adult; I just like kids’ books, okay.) I am also a dedicated multishipper, so if you want to include a pairing that I haven’t specifically asked for, it’ll be fine. I am not so keen on underage, though, so for the canons that have child characters I’d prefer if you aged them up if they are going to be doing anything more than holding hands and chaste kissing?

(Or you could write gen. I am totally cool with gen.)

I love crossovers, fusions, and canon-divergence AUs, but I don’t like mundane AUs of fantastical canons.

Okay, on to the prompts!

Dear rarewomen author,

Hello and thank you
for offering to write a story about one or more of my beloved fictional ladies! You may have noticed that I take the “rare” part of rare women quite seriously--none of these characters have more than a handful of stories written about them, if that. What this means is that I can pretty much guarantee I’ll be thrilled with whatever you write. It’s not like I’m going to be able to compare it unfavorably to the dozens of other stories about these characters, right?

But, seeing as how “anything” is a terrible prompt, have some optional details. Also, have a brief description of the canons I’m requesting, in case you don’t want to write for the fandom we matched on, or I’ve made it to the pinch hit list, or you’re idly curious, or you want to write me a treat. Or just on the off-chance that anyone reading this letter wants to consume some excellent (but obscure) media.

Attack of the 50-ft woman )

(If you are reading this because you read my journal/tumblr, and were not previously aware of rarewomen--you guys, do this fic exchange with me! It has all these excellent ladies and more available to write and request! I have gotten truly awesome stories for it in the past! You can find the details here. And if you have not done a yuletide-style fic exchange before, don’t be fooled--writing a letter to your assigned author is completely optional, and writing a letter more than twice the required length of the story is . . . well, let’s go with optional again. Optional is a polite word.)

ETA: This is the final, updated version of the letter. Sorry for the inconvenience (assuming that you checked this letter before I got this version up.)

Dear Spacer,

Hi there! Thanks for offering to write me a story or make me art for one of my favorite fandoms--IN SPACE! If you are an artist who got matched to me--a) oh, yay, I’m getting art in an exchange! And however small an amount of fic these fandoms get, they have even less fanart (well, except for the Uplift series, it’s hard to do less than zero), so the possibility of there being more is exciting too. But b) I have a lot more experience in writing fic prompts than art prompts? So, sorry about that, and I hope that you find what you need here.

Onwards and upwards! )

Hello there, yuletide writer! It’s the most wonderful time of the year again--the time when some poor sap has to write me a story for a canon that barely anyone else has ever heard of, let alone written fanfic for. And this year, you’re the poor sap!

Seriously though, if I were you I wouldn’t worry if you have a completely different idea for a story than the optional details below, or if you don’t happen to be the world’s greatest writer, or if you get hit by the Real Life bus and end up frantically banging on the keyboard two hours before the deadline--if by Christmas I have a story in one of these fandoms, I can pretty much guarantee I’ll be thrilled. It’s not like I’m going to be able to compare it unfavorably to the dozens of other stories in these fandoms, right?

Dear Fic Corner Scribbler,

I am so, so sorry about the lateness of this letter; real life happened and also I’ve got to learn to write shorter prompts. I hope you found the vague directions in the placeholder helpful? If you’ve already got an idea for a story and/or have started writing it, I’m sure I will like whatever it is--I mean, clearly you have excellent taste in books, right? But if you’re still looking for guidance, here it is, belated as it might be. (Also you may notice that some of these prompts are longer and more detailed than others; that is totally a function of how much I was hurrying to get this done and not at all a function of which canons I would be more interested in getting fic for.)

A few more general points:

The Darkangel Trilogy - Meredith Ann Pierce
Erin, Irrylath, Roshka, Sabr

The Darkangel Trilogy is written very firmly from Aeriel’s point of view, but at the same time there are all sorts of hints about interesting stories happening when she’s not around--I’d like to see one of those. (Which is not to say that you can’t include Aeriel; I like her a lot and only didn’t include her in my list of requested characters because she isn’t really the main focus of any of the prompts I thought of.)

How did Sabr become the bandit queen of Avaric? What adventures did she and Irrylath have during A Gathering of Gargoyles? What happened to Roshka and Erin after Aeriel left them? How did Erin’s first encounter with the people she was born to go?

Alternatively, if you’d like to write future fic, I’d love to see how an OT4 with Aeriel, Erin, Roshka and Irrylath would work. I’d also be interested in reading about Irrylath and Sabr (and possibly the Avarclon and Talb?) rebuilding Avaric--although I’d prefer gen there, since I’m not completely sold on Irrylath/Sabr. While I have a hard time picturing Sabr in a relationship with Irrylath as anything but a consolation prize--and I’d like to see them both do better than that--I confess I am intrigued by the possibility of Aeriel/Sabr. There’s a point where Aeriel thinks that Sabr is an undamaged version of Irrylath, and I am not convinced that this is actually a reason for Irrylath to be attracted to Sabr--but it is definitely a reason for Aeriel to be attracted to Sabr. On Sabr’s side, I get the feeling that she is attracted to power, and after the events of the trilogy, Aeriel is the power on the moon. I think it would be interesting to read these ladies working past their jealousy and suspicion towards something more . . . mutually satisfactory.

The Dunderheads Series - Paul Fleischman
Any

Incidentally, if you’re having trouble with whatever you matched me on, this is not a bad series to pick up. It’s two picture books (The Dunderheads and The Dunderheads Behind Bars, which I have not actually read yet, though I hope to get my hands on a copy soon) and it is charming as fuck--it’s a bit like what would happen if Roald Dahl and Charles Addams got together to write Ocean’s Eleven for preschoolers.

I’d really love to see casefic for this--some other criminal or semi-criminal caper that the kids pull off. Or else, where do their unique talents take them later in life? I kind of ship Einstein and Hollywood, and would be interested in reading how the somewhat skewed ideas about romance she’s picked up from movies collide with his unconventional approach to problem solving and how both of those things collide with the reality of them being kids trying this out for the first time before they’re quite ready for it. (Whether “this” is grade-school romance or sex or the whole marriage-and-kids-and-building-a-life-together would depend on what stage of their lives you choose to set it.)

Or else, a fandom AU might work well for this series--I mean, it wouldn’t even be an AU, Hollywood is in fandom already or will be when she gets a bit older. Can the other kids help her in her quest to become a BNF?

Fox in Socks - Dr. Seuss
Fox in Socks, Mr. Knox

One of the things you do when you are a parent of a small child is read the same picture books over and over, and one of the things you do when you read the same picture books over and over is think way too much about them. (At least for values of you that include me.)

And this is how I became convinced that Mr. Knox and Mr. Fox are in some sort of (not necessarily sexual) D/s relationship. Why else does Mr. Knox put up with Mr. Fox’s increasingly bizarre and capricious demands? Also, check out this illustration:

I rest my case.

I don’t actually need teen-and-up content for this story, I just put that as the minimum rating because I didn’t want to get matched with someone who wasn’t up for childhood-ruining in this particular canon. If you have a different view of Mr. Knox and Mr. Fox’s relationship, I’d like to read that, too, as long as you answer this question: What other games do Mr. Knox and Mr. Fox play?

The Game - Diana Wynne Jones
Sisyphus, Merope, Hayley, Troy

I’d love to see how Sisyphus, Merope, and Hayley negotiate being a family after the events of the book. Something exploring Hayley’s multiple nature as a more-or-less ordinary young girl, a thousands-of-years-old titaness, and a comet would be really cool--I’d love to see her interact with the luminaries from Dogsbody in that last capacity. Also, Troy is just cool, okay. Tell me how Troy built Troy! Or any of his adventures over the millennia.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians - Rick Riordan
Bianca Di Angelo, Nico Di Angelo

Give me all the Hades sibling fic! Baby Bianca and Nico fighting monsters? Five games they played at the Lotus Casino? An AU where Bianca lives and Nico dies? As long as they are being fierce and loyal and codependent, I will love it. (If they are being incestuous that’s cool too.) Also Hazel is one of my favorites--I couldn’t request her because she’s not even technically part of this series, but if you want to include her feel absolutely free.

Schooled - Gordon Korman
Zach Powers, Hugh Winkleman, Darryl Pennyfield

Hugh and Zach are such devious little weasels; they totally deserve each other. I will happily read anything about them. My ideal Zach/Hugh story would be one where they're secret boyfriends until a Korman-style katamari of wackiness forces them to a) come out and b) admit they actually like each other, and are not just together because it's easier than anything else. Also, Darryl is adorable and his crush on Cap is adorable; write me Darryl pining for Cap (or even getting Cap!) and I will be a happy camper. Alternatively, I’d be interested in reading about Darryl’s relationship with Zach--how did it start, and how much genuine friendship did Zach ever have for Darryl, other than Zach wanting a minion and Darryl being insecure? How does Darryl move on without Zach as his best friend after the events of the book, or do they manage to rebuild their friendship on a more equal basis? (I would not mind Darryl/Zach either, come to that.)

Super-Extra-Optional Details:

As I’ve mentioned, I’m interested in crossovers in general, and if you happen to be familiar with both Percy Jackson and The Game, I would be absolutely thrilled to get a crossover of those. I realize the universes would need a bit of tweaking in order to align--for one thing Kronos from Percy Jackson would have to be the same character as Hayley’s Granddad--but if you could make it work how awesome would it be to see the heroes from both series on opposite sides of a war? Imagine the build-off between Annabeth and Troy! Hayley keeping one or more of Hades’ children prisoner (turnabout being fair play and all). Or even just an interlude between Hayley and Zoe--they’re both children of Titans, one’s a comet and the other’s a constellation; I’m sure they’d find something to talk about.

Anyway! Once again, thank you and sorry and I hope you get something wonderful for fic corner!
