In between writing my Jukebox letter and doing a pinch hit for Rarewomen, I have not yet gotten around to telling you guys, I got a lovely story for Space Swap!

I'm not sure if I've got any CJ Cherryh fans who read this journal but have not yet read this story, but in case I do, go read it! It's a Cyteen fic, it's got Justin/Grant first times, and if you have ever wanted to wrap a warm blanket around Justin Warrick or are just delighted to know that The Princess Bride is evidently comfort-watching in the Warrick household, you will enjoy this fic.

For jukebox fest, I wrote Look Beyond for merfilly. It's based on Hazard by Richard Marx (the link is to the music video on youtube).

Here is what I got for fic corner:

A Sister's Love by flipflop_diva (Heroes of Olympus)

In which Nico really needs a hug and Bianca and Hazel give him one. My heart melted a little. Set during Mark of Athena, very slight allusions to sibling incest.

On a path, two travellers meet by Aeriel (Darkangel Trilogy)

Darkangel trilogy fic! Aeriel/Sabr! And also there is Roshka!

And here is what I wrote for fic corner:

The Village Witch's Ginger Hero for Jenn_Calaelen (Chronicles of Chrestomanci)

Featuring Marianne, Marianne's crush on Irene Yeldham, and the Folk.

The Wine Bowl for kristin (Chronicles of Prydain)

Mostly about Taran's love for pottery, but also could be described as the one where Eilonwy feeds the Argonauts laver bread.

And now, what I wrote for rarewomen:

All Hands and Doors for opalmatrix. It's a missing scene from book three of the Chronicles of the Kencyrath, and I'm afraid not terribly accessible if you're not familiar with canon--which hardly anyone is. But I'm reasonably happy with how it turned out, and opalmatrix seemed to like it, which is the important thing.

I (in addition to three other people) also wrote a last-minute pinch-hit for talibusorabat: Asami Sato's Special Occasion. It's post-series Asami (mostly) gen, with appearances by Tahno and Hiroshi, and it's a sequel of sorts to Asami Sato's New Digs, although you don't have to read the latter to enjoy the former.

I don't think I'm going to win rarewomen this year (I totally won rarewomen last year) but on the whole I'm not displeased.

This has been sitting on my hard drive for the better part of a year, trying to be a longer story, but I've finally decided to post the bit that I've got that stands alone. So here you go:

Asami Sato's New Digs

(G, 1100 words, ambiguously pre-romantic Asami/Bolin)

“Very well,” said Darcy.

These were all for [livejournal.com profile] cordialcount:

A Great Deal of Courage, and Anger: Vorkosigan Saga, Donna Vorrutyer/Olivia Koudelka. I couldn't keep this under a thousand words, so I split it into two parts, but now that reveals have happened it's posted as one story.

Escobar, the First Year: Vorkosigan Saga, a cycle of poems about the Durona Group's first year on Escobar. Also includes pretty pictures of flowers.

On One Foot: Cyteen; Yanni, Justin and Grant. [livejournal.com profile] cordialcount requested Yanni being Jewish in space; this . . . sort of qualifies?

For those of you who don't know, [livejournal.com profile] purimgifts is an exchange of short fic (300-1000 words, although if you post installments of the same story over the three days of posting you can get up to 3000 words) and graphics. It's focused on female characters, Jewish characters, and characters persecuted by evil viziers; it's fast-paced, often silly, and slightly manic; and now it's over and reveals have happened. So I can tell you that [livejournal.com profile] opalmatrix made me the following gifts:

A Heart at My Command: Amy/Quentin from Cyteen. Solidly physical and atmospheric and lovely.

She's Not There: Flower-in-the-Night/Abdullah from Castle in the Air. Magic spells! Married love! Problem-solving-skills! Flowery dialogue! (Some people apparently find Abdullah's speech patterns annoying but I love them okay.)

To the Top: Anthea Tesdinic from Conrad's Fate. OMG she actually drew me Anthea's fashion designs (with accompanying fashion-reporter commentary); I requested that but never expected it! (I want the blue one.)

I will post about my stories and some other stuff I liked later.

Today is [livejournal.com profile] avanti_90's birthday! [livejournal.com profile] avanti_90, for those of you who don't know, is an excellent writer, an excellent beta, and an all-round mad scientist. I wrote her a short piece of Alys/Padma fluff, which you can read here:

The Spare
(Alys/Padma, general audiences, about 500 words)

Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] avanti_90! I hope you have a wonderful day and a wonderful year.

So, yuletide reveals happened . . . almost a week ago . . . so it can now be told that I wrote Constant for [livejournal.com profile] el_staplador. The fandom is The Count of Monte Cristo, and the story itself is a character study of Fernand Mondego, thus continuing my yuletide tradition of justifying the ways of assholes to fans. (Last year I wrote Rounded With a Sleep, about Jordan Warrick. It's not my fault, I just keep getting these assignments! They're fun, though, maybe next year to keep up my streak I should only offer characters who are jerks.)

Also, it was [livejournal.com profile] imaginary_golux's birthday. Golux is a fellow fan of twisted fairy tales, so I wrote her The Queen's Favorite, which retells the story of the princess and her servant on the road from Grimm's "The Goose Girl," with more rape. (I didn't put that subtext in there, I swear.) Warning: there is rape.

It’s been the better part of a year since I last wrote a fannish sonnet; high time for another one, right?

So there’s a community called [livejournal.com profile] unkindestslash which has made it its mission to collect fic of all possible pairings in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. (It also implies in the user info that there’s a rivalry between Julius Caesar fandom and Antony and Cleopatra fandom, which is adorable, and, I suspect, false.) This is my contribution; the pairing is Cinna the Poet/Cinna the Conspirator:

But mightier than these, both pen and sword—
Though you may make Rome’s streets run red with blood
And I, with one precisely chosen word,
Can float your name untouched above the flood—
Is time, but not the blind, remorseless foe
Who crushes all beneath his sandaled feet
Inevitable as empire, and as slow
For in the end, the race goes to the fleet.
No pen is quick enough to catch your breath
The way it catches quick against my skin;
No dagger’s keen enough to deal the death
That, in the dying moment, dies again:
Each one a Rubicon. The die is cast,
And, worse than senseless, slips into the past.

So, in other news, I'm giving up on posting fic to lj, at least for the moment. Linking to stories on AO3 is just as good for most people, I think, and less work. So! Here are some stories I've written recently (or not-so-recently) and never got around to posting on lj:

Bonebreaker

Legend of Korra, Bolin, 450 words, PG-13
AU where Bolin is more involved in the triads than he was in canon.
Warning: violence

Let it Snow

Legend of Korra, Bolin/Iroh, 600 words, PG
Pure fluff. I am ashamed of the title, but it's too late to change it.

The Element of Freedom

Legend of Korra, Air Family, 3,400 words, G
The one where the air family goes to the Northern Air Temple to investigate claims of airbending there.

Sifu's Pet

Legend of Korra, Asami/Korra, 25,000 words, NC-17
Porn! Lots and lots of filthy porn. Read the tags on AO3 for warnings.

Heart and Home

Legend of Korra, Bolin/Iroh, 2,200 words, PG
More fluff. Also features Pabu.

What He Hath Made Crooked

Bible, Joash son of Ahaziah, 1,200 words, PG-13
Aren't you glad I didn't say Legend of Korra? The one where Joash is the author of the book of Ecclesiastes, and also a woman.

As I've mentioned already, and as some of you may have noticed, I haven't been around much lately. But I would be remiss not to mention--have been remiss in not mentioning--that I participated in [livejournal.com profile] rarepairfest, and metonymy wrote me a lovely Korra/Asami fic:

in case you shake apart and want a brand new start

Asami demonstrates her mad people skills and takes Korra clubbing! Korra wears a suit and dances like a doofus! It is super cute and fun; you should read it.

Broh Week Drabbles

Fandom: Avatar: Legend of Korra

Relationship: Bolin/Iroh

Rating: PG

Word count: 700

Summary: A series of drabbles I wrote for Broh Week over on tumblr. There was a different prompt for each day: Comfort, Protection, Devotion, Rumors, Charming, Oblivious, and Bolin and Iroh tell everyone the truth about their relationship, respectively. I tried to take the prompts in a slightly different direction than the obvious one?

A Cup of Kindness

Fandom: Avatar: Legend of Korra

Relationships: Bolin & Mako, with background Bolin/Iroh

Rating: PG

Word count: 700

Summary: Bolin was still dressed in his party clothes, shiny jacket with the silver piping, the sort of thing that could get you in trouble in a place like this, but nobody bothered him at his corner table. He's just a kid, Mako had told Iroh, but he wasn't, really. It was hard for Mako to remember, sometimes. The words I told you so died on his lips.

In which Mako has to carry Bolin out of a sake house, again.

Note: This is a missing scene from Rikku's make me your radio. You probably don't need to read make me your radio in order to work out what's going on here; you just need to read make me your radio because it's really good.

Fairy Reel

Fandom: Chronicles of Chrestomanci

Characters: Cat, Tonino, Angelica, Marianne, and Klartch. Henceforth to be known as Cat Chant's Five-Man Band.

Rating: G

Word count: 450

Summary: "Er," said Cat. "Are you sure about this? I had those violin lessons when I was small, but I was never very good."

Cat has been summoned by . . . something, and Tonino has an idea for how to communicate with it.

Shy

I wrote this (in a tearing hurry) for a contest on tumblr, I might as well post it here too. I must say, it's weird being in a big, active fandom, even if I'm basically on the fringes of it.

Shy

Fandom: Avatar: Legend of Korra

Pairing: Bolin/Iroh

Rating: PG

Word count: 1,200

Summary: It wasn't that Bolin was shy. It wasn't that Iroh was intimidating—although, all right, he commanded all those ships and could practically fly using firebending and they said he once punched a bomb—but Bolin had been shot down by the Avatar. After that, the commander of the United Forces and possible heir to the Fire Throne was small potatoes. Like those ones they served at Foggy Swamp Tribe restaurants, with the crisp jackets and the buttery texture underneath when you peeled them off.

And here's my contribution to the [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen exchange, posted here for your convenience. (Your convenience, my attention-seeking; six of one, half-a-dozen of the other . . .)

Five Strays Elizabeth Naismith took in (and One That Got Away)

Fandom: The Vorkosigan Saga

Characters and Relationships: Elizabeth Naismith, Miles Naismith Vorkosigan, Elli Quinn, Ethan Urquhart, Kareen Koudelka, Ekaterin Vorsoisson Vorkosigan, Elizabeth Naismith & Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan

Rating: G

Word count: 2,600

Summary: Dear Cordelia,

I'm sure I don't need to tell you that Miles is a charming and intelligent young man; I've been enjoying his company immensely. He's made plenty of friends, and taken to the social opportunities at school with a great deal of verve. (For more details, please see the attached disciplinary reports from Principal Hatter.)

Because Chrestomanci fandom is just too darn active nowadays, I've decided to have a go at a different completely-dead-except-for-Yuletide fandom.

No, actually, I recently read Meredith Ann Pierce's Darkangel Trilogy and really enjoyed it. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone, but if it is your kind of thing you will like it. That's an even less helpful statement than you might think, because it is unlike just about everything out there--for instance, despite what the packaging on the edition I read would have you believe, it is definitely not medievally vampire romance.

Anyway! In a series where women and the relationships between women are very prominent, I seem to have written slash between two dudes who never interact in canon. I feel like one of those misogynistic slash fangirls everyone always complains about. I am a bit embarrassed, but I'm not sorry.

Pilgrim's Road to Crystalglass

Fandom: Meredith Ann Pierce, Darkangel Trilogy

Pairing: Roshka/Irrylath

Rating: PG-13

Word count: 3,800

Summary: Some said the pilgrim's call had first gone out when the Aeriel arrived in Crystalglass. In truth, the call had come upon the world so gradually that no one could say for certain how it had started, only that they heard it now. Not a compulsion, but a constant reminder: Help is here. Everything that moved in the world felt the call, and knew where to find Crystalglass at need.

Irrylath goes to Crystalglass. Roshka goes with him.

Warning: Allusions to rape and sexual abuse of minors, both canonical and extrapolated.

The Hunt of the Unicorn

Chapter 3: The Unicorn Leaps the Stream

Chapter 1 | Chapter 2

Fandom: The Chronicles of Chrestomanci

Characters: Gabriel de Witt, Jed Farleigh, Elijah Pinhoe, Benjamin Allworthy, Molly the Unicorn, original characters

Rating: PG-13

Word count: 1,400

Summary: "Your mum's an abomination, Jacky Callow," said Elijah, struggling to his knees.

"Elijah? What's happened to you?"

"Not you, clearly." Elijah's lip curled. "Couldn't hit the broad side of a barn."

Seventy years before the events of The Pinhoe Egg, a group of wizards goes shooting on the grounds of Chrestomanci Castle, and there's things abroad in the woods.

Note: The title of this story, as well as the chapter titles, comes from a series of tapestries made in the Netherlands around 1500. I'll be including the relevant tapestry with each chapter, because.

Oh and also: what I know about game shooting I learned in a mad scramble to research this story. Please feel free to correct my ignorance.

Cordelia's Reply to Ezar

Fandom: The Vorkosigan Saga

Characters: Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan, Ezar Vorbarra

Rating: G

Word count: 130

Summary: My Bible says the meek are blessed
Your planet kills and eats the flawed—
But he who laughs the last laughs best

Cordelia replies to Ezar's Reply to the Passionate Shepherd.

Note: I thought since Cordelia isn't Barrayaran, she should use a different poetic form.
