I am working on the remix for dropsofviolet! Very slowly.

A slim form slips out the tent flap--it’s probably meant to be unobtrusive, but the piping on her coat is bright red, and Mako is sitting directly in the blast of cold air that comes in as she goes out. He gets halfway out of his seat before Korra grabs a handful of his jacket and yanks.

“Sit down, buster.”

“But,” says Mako. “She’ll get lost, she’ll freeze. And just because she’s mad about seeing us together--well, she has reason to be mad, I guess.”

And now, what I wrote for rarewomen:

All Hands and Doors for opalmatrix. It's a missing scene from book three of the Chronicles of the Kencyrath, and I'm afraid not terribly accessible if you're not familiar with canon--which hardly anyone is. But I'm reasonably happy with how it turned out, and opalmatrix seemed to like it, which is the important thing.

I (in addition to three other people) also wrote a last-minute pinch-hit for talibusorabat: Asami Sato's Special Occasion. It's post-series Asami (mostly) gen, with appearances by Tahno and Hiroshi, and it's a sequel of sorts to Asami Sato's New Digs, although you don't have to read the latter to enjoy the former.

I don't think I'm going to win rarewomen this year (I totally won rarewomen last year) but on the whole I'm not displeased.

This has been sitting on my hard drive for the better part of a year, trying to be a longer story, but I've finally decided to post the bit that I've got that stands alone. So here you go:

Asami Sato's New Digs

(G, 1100 words, ambiguously pre-romantic Asami/Bolin)

Each Sunday, post six sentences from a writing project -- published, submitted, in progress, for your cat -- whatever.

It's still Sunday! This is from the same fic as last time.

Asami puts her basket on the table, and sits in the chair opposite her father. She hardly recognizes him anymore, with his beard grown out and his mustache a scraggly mess. The guards have taken his glasses away, leaving him as blind as a badgermole; the first time Asami had been allowed to visit, and seen that, she'd stormed into Chief Bei Fong's office, livid. The chief had calmly explained that Hiroshi had been caught dismantling his glasses for parts; he was also never given chopsticks or a spoon with his meals since the episode with the helicopter. "When someone locked my mother up, she invented metalbending," Chief Bei Fong said. Asami wasn't sure whether this was intended as sympathy, one-upsmanship, or what.

Bolin levers the top open and lifts out a small tree in a green clay pot; its leaves are round and fleshy, like little discs.

Asami's first unworthy thought is another thing to take care of, but if Air Temple Island has ten thousand trees on it, her apartment might have one. The memories of that place, good and bad, aren't ones she wants to let go of yet. "It's lovely."

"It's a money tree," says Bolin. "Because, see, the leaves look kind of like silver yuans, and they say if you have one in your house then oh no Asami please don't cry."

I should really finish this fic before it gets jossed by book 2! Failing that, I suppose I could just post the section with Asami and Bolin, which will leave it looking like Asami/Bolin or at least pre-Asami/Bolin which wasn't my original intention, but there are still good bits in it.

Okay, so I went and wrote a skipping rhyme for Water Tribe girls in Republic City to use when they’re playing jump the water whip. I actually have an idea for a story I’m going to use this in, but I’m not sure if/when I’ll write it, so for now here’s this:

Thunderclap from a clear blue sky

Asked the moon who’ll be my guy

Fire and flood, death and birth

I’ll marry a man who can bend the earth

All Earth’s creatures, use your eyes

What if my earthbender dies?

Princess Yue, chieftain’s daughter

I’ll marry a man who can bend the water

Under heaven, bow together

He up and left when we got hot weather

Tui and La, who can jump higher?

I’ll marry a man who can bend the fire

Spirit Oasis, leap and dance

He went and burned my favorite pants

Hotman, you had best run far

I’m gonna marry the Avatar

The first lines of the verses are based on the following enlightenment poem by Wumen Hui-k'ai, which I got off of Wikipedia:

A thunderclap under the clear blue sky

All beings on earth open their eyes;

Everything under heaven bows together;

Mount Sumeru leaps up and dances.

So, in other news, I'm giving up on posting fic to lj, at least for the moment. Linking to stories on AO3 is just as good for most people, I think, and less work. So! Here are some stories I've written recently (or not-so-recently) and never got around to posting on lj:

Bonebreaker

Legend of Korra, Bolin, 450 words, PG-13
AU where Bolin is more involved in the triads than he was in canon.
Warning: violence

Let it Snow

Legend of Korra, Bolin/Iroh, 600 words, PG
Pure fluff. I am ashamed of the title, but it's too late to change it.

The Element of Freedom

Legend of Korra, Air Family, 3,400 words, G
The one where the air family goes to the Northern Air Temple to investigate claims of airbending there.

Sifu's Pet

Legend of Korra, Asami/Korra, 25,000 words, NC-17
Porn! Lots and lots of filthy porn. Read the tags on AO3 for warnings.

Heart and Home

Legend of Korra, Bolin/Iroh, 2,200 words, PG
More fluff. Also features Pabu.

What He Hath Made Crooked

Bible, Joash son of Ahaziah, 1,200 words, PG-13
Aren't you glad I didn't say Legend of Korra? The one where Joash is the author of the book of Ecclesiastes, and also a woman.

As I've mentioned already, and as some of you may have noticed, I haven't been around much lately. But I would be remiss not to mention--have been remiss in not mentioning--that I participated in [livejournal.com profile] rarepairfest, and metonymy wrote me a lovely Korra/Asami fic:

in case you shake apart and want a brand new start

Asami demonstrates her mad people skills and takes Korra clubbing! Korra wears a suit and dances like a doofus! It is super cute and fun; you should read it.

Broh Week Drabbles

Fandom: Avatar: Legend of Korra

Relationship: Bolin/Iroh

Rating: PG

Word count: 700

Summary: A series of drabbles I wrote for Broh Week over on tumblr. There was a different prompt for each day: Comfort, Protection, Devotion, Rumors, Charming, Oblivious, and Bolin and Iroh tell everyone the truth about their relationship, respectively. I tried to take the prompts in a slightly different direction than the obvious one?

We interrupt your regularly-scheduled abandoning-lj-for-tumblr to post a link to something on tumblr.

It is, as most of you are probably unaware, Broh Week on tumblr, and I've written a series of Bolin/Iroh II drabbles for the occasion. One of which was turned into a comic by the incredible olifen!

How cool is that, seriously.

A Cup of Kindness

Fandom: Avatar: Legend of Korra

Relationships: Bolin & Mako, with background Bolin/Iroh

Rating: PG

Word count: 700

Summary: Bolin was still dressed in his party clothes, shiny jacket with the silver piping, the sort of thing that could get you in trouble in a place like this, but nobody bothered him at his corner table. He's just a kid, Mako had told Iroh, but he wasn't, really. It was hard for Mako to remember, sometimes. The words I told you so died on his lips.

In which Mako has to carry Bolin out of a sake house, again.

Note: This is a missing scene from Rikku's make me your radio. You probably don't need to read make me your radio in order to work out what's going on here; you just need to read make me your radio because it's really good.

Fairy Reel

Fandom: Chronicles of Chrestomanci

Characters: Cat, Tonino, Angelica, Marianne, and Klartch. Henceforth to be known as Cat Chant's Five-Man Band.

Rating: G

Word count: 450

Summary: "Er," said Cat. "Are you sure about this? I had those violin lessons when I was small, but I was never very good."

Cat has been summoned by . . . something, and Tonino has an idea for how to communicate with it.

This one's for: Elycien aka ninelifed

Shy

I wrote this (in a tearing hurry) for a contest on tumblr, I might as well post it here too. I must say, it's weird being in a big, active fandom, even if I'm basically on the fringes of it.

Shy

Fandom: Avatar: Legend of Korra

Pairing: Bolin/Iroh

Rating: PG

Word count: 1,200

Summary: It wasn't that Bolin was shy. It wasn't that Iroh was intimidating—although, all right, he commanded all those ships and could practically fly using firebending and they said he once punched a bomb—but Bolin had been shot down by the Avatar. After that, the commander of the United Forces and possible heir to the Fire Throne was small potatoes. Like those ones they served at Foggy Swamp Tribe restaurants, with the crisp jackets and the buttery texture underneath when you peeled them off.

I was a voracious reader as a child, but never--unlike many children who are voracious readers--an indiscriminate one. Possibly this was because I came from a very literate and fairly well-off family; there was a constant influx of new books into the house.

Also, when I was around seven or eight, I found The Color Purple on my mother's bookshelf. I was horrified, and, I recognize in retrospect, a bit turned on, which didn't actually make the experience less horrifying. I may have been cured of picking up books at random for life.

Throughout my childhood, there was a book at my grandparents' house called Inspector Saito's Small Satori. The title is memorable enough that it has been lodged in my memory for most of my life, but perhaps for the aforementioned reasons, I don't think I ever tried to read it. If I did, I certainly didn't get very far.

Also, I didn't know what satori meant. Based on the cover of the book, I decided it was something like a gazebo.

All this is to say that I have been seized with the urge to write a fic called "Asami Sato's Small Satori" but a) I feel this would be inappropriate, as I have never read the book in question, and b) I have no idea what the fic would be about.

Possibly a gazebo?

ETA: Also a good name for a fic: “Inspector Spacetime’s Small Satori”. This has the additional problem that I have never seen an episode of Community. And yet, I feel like I should do a pan-fandom series on various characters’ small satoris. It would be like a Canadian shack, in a way.
minutia_r: (Default)
It all began, as it often does, with a dream: I don't recall the dream itself, but I woke up with the idea that Korra was a daughter of Poseidon, and thus Percy Jackson's little sister.

I was then seized with the urge to draw Percy, Hazel and Frank as pro benders. The elements line up perfectly! And I could design uniforms based on Roman Legionary armor!

So here they are, for the first time in Republic City, the pro bending champions from a different republic altogether: the Camp Jupiter Eagles!

Wombat eagles? Skink eagles? No, just . . . eagles. )
